However, there are a few drawbacks worth mentioning. The graphics are relatively basic, which may disappoint those looking for stunning visuals. Additionally, there have been reports of minor bugs, such as the ability to pass through rocks, which can disrupt the immersion.

The Planet Crafter is an excellent survival/crafting game. Unlike many others in the genre, it breaks the mold a bit by introducing the unique premise of playing as a convict sent to terraform a hostile planet and make it habitable. Along with the usual survival tasks, you’ll gradually work to alter three key parameters: heat, pressure, and O2 levels, all in the name of making the planet livable.
The game smartly paces its survival mechanics. Instead of progress being locked behind experience levels, new crafting options become available based on environmental changes, like heat melting glaciers, which opens up new areas to explore.
The planet itself is diverse, with different biomes hiding various secrets for you to uncover over time. The game’s challenge lies not in high-level enemies but in managing your O2 supply, which steadily depletes as you explore. While this mechanic is clever, it can quickly become frustrating when you’re trying to reach distant areas far from your base.
Visually, the game is stunning, with a decent variety of biomes and a relatively large map. However, the map can feel a bit empty overall.
The game avoids feeling repetitive because the terraforming phases progress as you play, which not only changes the environment but also shifts your objectives. Plus, The Planet Crafter carries a significant message: in a world where we’re often destroying and depleting our natural resources, here, you’re building life and nature from scratch. This sense of accomplishment is heightened every time you advance to a new stage of terraformation—it feels like a personal achievement, knowing that you’ve created everything on this planet.
That said, I do have some reservations. In the beginning, the game’s progression is fast-paced and exciting, with new discoveries coming quickly. But once you move past this initial phase, it takes much longer to unlock new content. There’s also a lot of walking involved—whether exploring or farming resources—and the frequent trips back to base to refill your O2 can become tedious. The tutorial is also a bit unclear; I spent a long time trying to figure out how to install a progress panel, only to realize I needed to make progress before it could be installed. And the music… there are only three tracks, which get old pretty fast.
Nevertheless, it’s rare to find a survival game this well-thought-out. You can tell the developers put a lot of effort into making it original, and they’ve succeeded.
