Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition is a game that truly captured my heart, despite some flaws that might be hard to overlook by today’s standards. However, I remain thoroughly enchanted by its unique approach, which bravely ventures off the beaten path.
This game is a medieval simulation set in 15th-century Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic), a historically rich and well-researched environment. You step into the shoes of Henry, a blacksmith’s son, and experience the chaos that ensues when the King of Hungary takes advantage of his half-brother’s weakness, leading an invasion that devastates the land. The narrative’s depth is enhanced by the alliance between the Hungarian king and ruthless barbarians, adding a predatory edge to the story that naturally stirs a sense of rebellion against the invading forces.
Playing as Henry feels akin to representing a “small Gaulish village,” with Skalitz being the first victim of the invasion. As you guide Henry on his journey, you’ll find yourself building a reputation and defending the small kingdom of Bohemia alongside a cast of endearing characters.
The game’s strengths lie in its realistic and impactful combat, though it can become chaotic, especially when facing multiple enemies. Additionally, there are numerous investigations—perhaps too many—alongside morally complex quests that remind us that the Middle Ages were far from the romanticized era of heroism. Stealth, lockpicking, and pickpocketing are necessary skills, adding to the gameplay’s depth and requiring you to be crafty to succeed.
I found the game to be highly immersive, with a fascinating map and a pleasant bucolic setting. The lighting is beautiful, compensating for somewhat dated graphics. While the combat could use slight improvements to reduce the chaos, it adds to the simulation aspect, making it challenging to overcome hordes of enemies. The swordplay is engaging, offering varied moves, and the bow gameplay, without a crosshair, is also enjoyable. The characters you meet along the way are genuinely memorable.
However, the game’s most glaring issue on the PS4 version I played is the catastrophic draw distances, particularly in the larger southern cities like Rattay and Sasau.
While some quests are excellent and others less so, the investigation elements can become repetitive over time. The DLCs are enjoyable, though too short for my taste. But the game’s true strength lies in its immersion, and don’t be discouraged by the lockpicking—it does get easier with perseverance. This challenge, while demanding, offers a much greater sense of satisfaction than the overly simplified experiences common today. Plus, Henry’s skills improve over time, rewarding your effort.
In conclusion, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a game that demands investment to fully appreciate its qualities. But trust me, if you enjoy historical simulations, it’s well worth your time.
