I’m a veteran of multiplayer, so I don’t have any opinions on the campaign yet since I haven’t touched it, but I can already say that this DLC is a great addition to the base game and absolutely deserves your attention:
++ I’m really enjoying the new maps so far, especially ones like Gorges that the community has been requesting since they appeared in tournaments. They’re different, varied, seem balanced for now, and most importantly, they’re fun to play.
+++ The two new civilizations, the Japanese and the Byzantines, both have versatile tactical designs. The addition of active and passive abilities to their units, unique units that complement standard unit combinations (like the onna-bugeisha), and mercenaries for the Byzantines, which really change up army composition possibilities, are all fantastic. The civ mechanics (TC for Japanese, cisterns for Byzantines) are fresh and strategically interesting. Plus, the visuals and sound design are excellent (just listen to the Ozutsu or the Byzantine ETIMOS—pure brilliance). All of this makes for an AMAZING addition to the base game, which, despite its rocky launch and valid criticisms, has been meticulously refined and is now an absolute joy to play.
The four variants, even though they may seem like they’re just reusing assets from their original civilizations, play completely differently. For example, when playing as Joan of Arc, your strategy isn’t limited to the French style of play. In fact, thanks to her Consecration system, which reduces the production costs of chosen buildings, you can strategically move towards any army composition while still benefiting from the French Royal Knights. She’s also the game’s first true ‘Hero Unit,’ offering a genuinely new way to play as the French.
++ Microsoft has been investing in this franchise in a healthy and consistent way for several years now. The scene is seeing regular big tournaments and a thriving Twitch community. You’ll also find amateur tournaments on many Discord servers, and YouTube will be your best friend if you want to learn, with plenty of guides and casted replays available.
++ Oh, and of course, unlike others who try to charge you 25-30€+ for a reskin or 60€ for recycled content full of bugs (cough Creative Assembly cough), here it’s 15€ at full price, which I think is more than fair for what you get.
