UBOAT is a World War II submarine simulator unlike any other. It is a survival sandbox game that emphasizes crew management and focuses on the lives of German sailors. The submarine is their home, but it can quickly turn into their grave.
In UBOAT, you control the crew to control the boat. Managing their physical and mental health is crucial, as hungry, tired, or depressed sailors will leave you with no chance of winning any skirmish. The game’s survival elements are built upon a comprehensive damage system.
Unexpected situations may arise due to damage, the player’s creativity, and their ability to stay calm. You can choose to save the entire crew or leave someone behind to save the others.

I completed the training and embarked on my first patrol aboard my submarine, the U-96. The initial hours of gameplay are quite enjoyable, as the tutorial guides you well. Additionally, some tasks that could be challenging for a novice like me (such as calculating a firing solution) can be handled by an officer or crew member. I allowed myself to be assisted right from the start to focus on the core mechanics (comfortably seated with a bit of ambient light): maneuvering my submarine and launching a few torpedoes.
You learn a lot about life on a submarine, especially the famous U-boat VIIC, which enabled the German Navy (the Kriegsmarine) to gain the upper hand over the British fleet between 1940 and 1943. It quickly became a decisive asset and was consequently produced in large numbers during that period.
The U-boat VIIC was equipped with 2 propellers, 2 electric diving motors, and 2 surface diesel engines. The surface engines, being more powerful, were not operational during dives but allowed the submarine to cover long distances, approximately 6000 nautical miles. The electric motors, on the other hand, took over during submerged phases and could propel the submarine for up to 80 nautical miles. Their batteries could be recharged by the diesel engines, which was an impressive innovation for the time.
In conclusion, the U-BOAT VIIC was a hybrid vessel, somewhere between a cruiser and the submarines we know today: it wasn’t designed for underwater navigation but rather for surface operations. Every action on board the submarine had to be carefully planned and executed with foresight. This gives a clearer understanding of the challenges faced by German submariners.
