Crysis 3 is a very good game, but perhaps the weakest of the trilogy. The graphics in the second game had already dropped compared to the first, likely due to the increased complexity of modeling a city. Unfortunately, Crysis 3 doesn’t quite match the visual quality of the original either, despite much of the gameplay taking place indoors, at night, or underground, which limits the visual scope. The textures feel less refined and flatter, especially when it comes to vegetation, which is the most significant change. In some areas, the vegetation even has rough, geometric shapes, though I may be nitpicking.
The execution remains as stunning and well-crafted as in the previous installments. Crysis 3 does regain some of the freedom in movement that the first game had, making it less linear than the second. The gameplay is solid, though less fluid and satisfying than in the second game. Small details, like the ability to go prone (removed since Crysis 2), have not returned. While these are minor details, they do add to realism and their absence feels odd after having them.
Additionally, I play FPS games without a reticle for a more realistic experience, as it doesn’t exist in real life. The addition of the bow is a nice touch, but the lack of aiming without a reticle (only a light zoom occurs) is frustrating. A sight on the bow, like on modern bows, would have been useful. As it stands, shooting arrows feels like a guessing game, similar to firing a mortar, forcing me to re-enable the reticle.
Despite these details, which may be minor to some, Crysis 3 is worth playing. It’s a genuinely good FPS that won’t disappoint.
