  1. R-Type Final 2 arrives on consoles and PC, driven by successful crowdfunding campaigns, and it aims to pay tribute to its 128-bit era predecessor (yes, there was a time when consoles were labeled this way). From the very first moments, the game feels familiar. The historical antagonist, Bydo, is more menacing than ever, and the brief introduction quickly leads to the intense battle against this intergalactic threat. After selecting one of three available ships, players are launched into space, and the bullet hell begins! Staying true to the series, R-Type Final 2 is filled with massive enemies, multi-directional shooting, relentless waves, and its sometimes organic universe accompanied by electronic soundscapes. The 3D graphics, dynamic camera, and lighting effects deliver a visually striking experience. However, on the Nintendo Switch, the version tested here, the game looks significantly better in docked mode. On the TV, the resolution seems a bit low, and some textures appear rough. Nonetheless, the game quickly feels familiar, especially as the gameplay closely follows the principles of the originals.

  2. R-Type Final 2 offers a challenging experience, especially if you start on Normal difficulty. Even seasoned players will need time to adjust, and upgrading your equipment is essential. It’s advisable to begin with an easier difficulty setting and gradually work your way up once you’ve acquired better gear.

The game features horizontal, auto-scrolling levels that require you to stay clear of the right edge of the screen to avoid sudden enemy attacks. Thankfully, you have several weapons at your disposal, including a standard shot (square button) that can be charged for a more powerful blast. Your ship is also equipped with the Force, a versatile defense unit that can be attached to the front or rear to fend off enemies. Once your special gauge is full, pressing the triangle button unleashes a devastating special attack. If you’re unsure of the controls, the R manual is a comprehensive guide.

Despite this arsenal, the game is far from easy. Enemies are both numerous and fast, filling the screen with relentless fire. Navigating through these hazards while taking down the Bydo requires more than just blind shooting. Bosses, in particular, are massive and formidable, testing your skills to the limit.

Even during intense battles where the screen is dominated by enemies and projectiles, R-Type Final 2 maintains clear visibility without becoming visually overwhelming. The game’s vibrant color palette is one of its standout features, and while the models are simple, this simplicity works in the game’s favor, ensuring the action remains clear and engaging at all times.
