Announced during a Bethesda E3 conference, the reboot of Prey quickly gained an air of mystery characteristic of Arkane’s productions. While the Lyon-based studio has consistently delivered top-tier titles like Dishonored, it’s their Austin branch that takes the helm for what the developers describe as a sci-fi thriller. Recently, we got our hands on the game during two preview sessions, which hinted at the undeniable qualities of the title, but nothing could truly prepare us for the impact it would have.
Unlike Dishonored 2, where the Void Engine pushed even the most powerful rigs to their limits in certain scenes, the CRYENGINE powering Prey runs like a charm, even on our more modest setup with all settings maxed out. Since there’s no built-in benchmark tool, our performance tests were conducted on a predefined path through the game, tirelessly traversed by our very own AoNoShiro. Big thanks to him for enduring the lowest framerates with ease.
In terms of performance, there isn’t much to critique. Some users have reported issues with the latest Nvidia drivers (382.05), which cause annoying stuttering, but rolling back to an earlier version seems to fix the problem.
As for image quality, there’s not much to improve beyond the game’s original offering. However, a Steam guide suggests removing motion blur and chromatic aberrations, which is always a plus for those who prefer a cleaner visual experience.
