Deathbound is a fairly traditional Souls-like that draws heavy inspiration from the first Dark Souls. To stand out from the competition, the team at Trialforge Studio has introduced a unique mechanic that allows players to switch between multiple characters, set within a distinctive universe. Priced at 30 euros, the game doesn’t aim to be the next big reference but rather to offer a well-crafted and inspired gaming experience. However, despite some good ideas, the final product feels quite laborious.
Deathbound attempts to take on the genre popularized by the Dark Souls trilogy by introducing its own unique ideas. Unfortunately, it ultimately falters due to an unsteady execution. As the first game from Trialforge Studio, it’s clear they didn’t choose the easiest genre to tackle. Deathbound aims to carve out a space in the category dominated by FromSoftware, who not only mastered it but revitalized it with Elden Ring. Taking on such a challenge is ambitious, and the game is armed with original ideas to set it apart.
However, the desire to applaud studios for stepping outside the box cannot overshadow the final experience delivered to players. In Deathbound’s case, the experience constantly oscillates between admiring the developers’ creativity and lamenting the poor execution. It’s evident that Trialforge Studio approached the project with more passion than precision. In their effort to innovate without adequate control, Deathbound becomes an experience plagued by numerous flaws.
